Research on
dance and sound poetry

Inspired by an image that arose out of the Dance performance Installation “Ugo” (performed in 2007 in Sophiensaelle Berlin) I would like to dedicate my research to the exploration of an object and its influence on and inspiration for dance movement: a sculpture like a white pointed hat. This object is taken out of its previous context and is now to become the starting point for something new.

I have realized that this hat does not only create strong images, but also (through its size, weight and materiality) influences movement in a very specific way. I am very much inspired by the idea of creating movement that is evoked by working with this object and want to take time to explore the creative potential that lies within that “partnership”.

The shape of the hat, a cone, also suggests a specific connection to sound. Therefore I would like to use part of my research time to investigate, with a sound designer, on a possible sound installation that supports the imagery and movement language that I am developing. Connecting the source of sound to the hat might add another level of experience and meaning to the duality of body and object and help create suspense within their dialogue.

What is specifically outstanding and innovative about the research?

Dance is developed through a close connection to other arts and their settings, specifically sculpture/objects and sound installation. Both of these sources of inspiration derive from mostly gallery based settings and are very likely to give an installation/exposition like look or feeling to the dance. Movement is developed within and through interrelation with these elements. It is thus strongly influenced by them and might be perceived in another way. All three elements are closely linked together within the creation process and are all derived from the image of the pointed hat. So they do not only share the same starting point, but are also involved in a dialogue throughout the process.

Research outline, methodology.

As explained above, my research concentrate on two fields. The first one will be the exploration of a movement language and imagery in dialogue with the object of the hat. The second one will be the investigation of a possible sound installation to support and broaden this imagery.

The dance movement in this project will be informed by the figure, weight and texture of an already existing, sculpture-like pointed hat. It will be evoked by a physical research and dialogue with the object. Playing with the possibilities, restrictions and reactions that this object allows to the dancer and any meaning or association this might provoke, my research wants to explore the language of movement and imagery that can be developed between this specific object and my own physicality and movement vocabulary. How might the latter be challenged to new forms through that dialogue? How can my movement be influenced by the object and how can this be perceived from the outside? Which kind of imagery can be evoked? And what kind of associations are emerging through these images?

The integration of sound is based on the image of the hat and its movement that is being developed through the dance. Finding interesting moments and ways to underline or add suspense to the dialogue between body and object, the sound designer will experiment with possible ways of letting sound interfere both spatially and on a level of meaning. Installing the source of the sound within the hat might allow for the sound to be influenced by the movement of the hat (through the movement of the dancer). How is the movement of each of the three elements influencing the others and what is originating in between?

“My research goal is to find a specific language of movement, imagery and sound that is derived from the close dialogue with the object of the hat”.
